Abundant Utilities

Electricity
Electric power and important related services are supplied to
Edgerton by contractual agreements with AMP-Ohio, Inc. a non-profit cooperative
located in Columbus, OH. AMP-Ohio purchases bulk power on the open market
from the lowest bidders and divides it up among participating members.
Because AMP-Ohio is non-profit, we buy that power at just a little more than
they pay for it with just transmission fees and other operating overhead costs
added. The savings on wholesale costs averages more than 50% compared to
what we would pay for "investor-owned" power that is provided for many
surrounding communities. Membership in AMP-Ohio benefits us in many ways
other than low rates including legal and governmental representation at state
and federal levels, joint venture group participation, a circuit rider
assistance program, educational materials and much more. August 14th 2003
was a day of infamy in the United States because of the multi-state "BlackOut"
affecting millions from New England through Ohio , but for us here in Edgerton
it was FAMOUS. We energized our new 20 MVA substation on that nightmare of
a day to access power from a different grid and our community entered a new era
of reliability with their already affordable public power.

We have access to the AMP-Ohio Mutual Aid program, which means that in
the event of an emergency (such as storm damage) surrounding participating AMP-Ohio communities lend
personnel, equipment and materials to help us get our electric
system operating at full capacity as quickly as possible. We do the same
for them. We also are
taking advantage of a "Demand Side Load Management" program which
means switching air conditioners and water heaters in residential homes on and
off for a few minutes at various times of the day to save everyone an enormous
amount during peak-usage times of the year. That is handled by signals
from the dispatch center in AMP-Ohio's headquarters in Columbus. We also subscribe to Public
Power News for disseminating electric-related and other educational material to our
residents through quarterly issues.
Our municipal utility department has provided and maintained
our own
electric distribution system since its inception in 1937. The system was
recently upgraded to a much higher 12,470 volt distribution level, and includes environmentally-friendly
(PCB-free) transformers and all new wiring. Current rates on our electricity
are available upon request and an average billing can be computed for you by
giving us your average usage data. Check it out, you'll be amazed at how
much you could save by making the Village of Edgerton your homebase.
Natural and Propane Gas
The Ohio Gas Company serves Edgerton and 43 other communities in
northwest Ohio from three area offices. The principal office is
located in Bryan, OH where complete engineering, distribution, accounting and
new business departments are maintained. Although our service area is
primarily agricultural, industrial growth has been excellent in recent
years. Ohio Gas Company now serves more than 50,000 customers of which 350
are industrial. The long term suppliers to Ohio Gas Company are Panhandle
Eastern Pipe Line Company, ANR, and Crossroads Pipelines. That supply has been expanded with additional
Ohio production and underground storage. As a result, Ohio Gas Company has ample
supplies of natural gas available for new industry and existing industry
expansions. Propane gas is also available from several distributors in the
area.
Fresh Water and Waste Treatment
Edgerton's municipal water system distributes fresh treated water pumped from
three wells of approximately 80-feet in depth. There are two 100,000
gallon tanks elevated 100 feet above ground with a reserve of an additional
50,000 of untreated water at ground level. Our present water consumption
is about 1/2 of our capacity. Additional water is always available if required
because Edgerton is situated on a gravel moraine with a water capacity many
times higher than the present usage. The whole of Williams County is said to literally
sit on an underground lake so water is very plentiful here. Check out
these documents to learn much more detail about our water:
Our modern storm drainage system serves the entire village and a
central sewage treatment system is adequate for a village double our size,
allowing plenty of capacity for expansion and growth.
